Having a live-in maid is fundamentally different from a part-time arrangement. She lives in your home, shares your space, and becomes part of your household's daily rhythm. This closeness can be wonderful (reliable, always-available help) or challenging (privacy concerns, boundary issues). Here's how to make it work.

Setting Up the Space

  • Provide a private room — Even if small, a maid's own space with a door that locks is essential for dignity and privacy
  • Separate bathroom access — Ideally her own; if not possible, designate shared bathroom times
  • Basic amenities — Fan/AC, a bed (not the floor), clean bedding, storage for personal items, and mobile charging point

Working Hours for Live-In Help

Live-in doesn't mean 24/7 on-call. Set clear working hours (e.g., 7 AM - 1 PM and 4 PM - 8 PM) with designated rest periods. She should have evenings free after dinner duties and uninterrupted sleep.

Meal Arrangements

Provide all three meals plus tea. Let her eat the same food the family eats — not leftovers or separate (inferior) food. This sounds obvious, but it's sadly not universal.

Weekly Off & Leave

One full day off per week is mandatory. She should be free to leave the house, visit her family, or do whatever she wants. Annual leave of 7-15 days (to visit her village/family) should be planned in advance.

Privacy Rules

  • Knock before entering each other's spaces
  • Don't go through her personal belongings
  • Respect her phone time during off-hours
  • She shouldn't share family details with outsiders (include in agreement)
